On Wednesday, Habib and I went to Jirapa Hospital in the neighbouring district. This is where ATE is supporting a further 50 disabled children and their families under the SNAP programme, overseen in Jirapa by Imelda.
The Orthopaedic Training Centre (OTC) based in Nsawam, just outside Accra, has a mobile team which carries out consultations and fittings for new orthopaedic equipment in the three northern regions every six months. On 8th June some of our ATE-supported children were being seen.
It was amazing to see Imelda at work! She works at the hospital and she knows the names and cases and needs of each and every disabled person attending the OTC consultation.
The children winced patiently while being measured for new callipers and worked hard at getting used to their new equipment (see photos: OTC album). The Jirapa Hospital has a physiotherapy unit and some of the children will be residential patients over the school holidays to help them get used to their equipment and improve their breadth of movement.
The highlights for me were seeing Machiana practicing walking with the help of the physical therapy parallel bars, rolling along a large exercise ball which had her shrieking with delight, and seeing the determination on Augustine's face as he tentatively tried out his new crutches.
Over the coming months we will be identifying disabled children from the Lawra SNAP group who will have their consultations in December.
