Day 9.
Up at 8.30 would you believe in order to catch an early bus to Sigatoka for this rugby match we have been on a wild goose chase looking for. Duncs had a good journey but I had to ‘share’ a seat with a seemingly skinny, but I was soon to find out fat arsed Fijian woman. 2 hours literally hanging on to the end of the seat after the previous night was very grim.
We checked into the same hostel as before in perfect time to catch a lift to the game with the receptionist. As soon as we entered the ground, we know we were in for a treat. No foreigners, kids up putting numbers on the scoreboard, and the home team doing a stretch routine outside the turnstiles before kick off….a real Fiji experience. The best part was seeing a strange bloke on the touchline loosely copying the home teams warm up drills, complete with taped up ears and football boots (see pic). We were later told that he is the local weirdo who comes to every game and the fans were wolf whistling him all the way through. Occasionally he apparently runs on and steals the ball at half time, but we weren’t treated to this. I guess he must be mentally handicapped and wants to get involved, but I doubt they officially recognise that over here, bless him…….we still laughed hysterically at him though don’t get me wrong J .
The game was between Sigatoka Saracens and Suva Highlanders. How exciting. As non rugby fans we were there mainly for the experience and I have no idea about what standard was on display. A few sick tackles or a fight were all we could hope for in terms of on pitch excitement. Sigatoka Saracens won 16-6 so we felt no need to smash up and shops, throw bricks at Suva fans and the like J . On a serious note, despite clearly being foreigners and the only whites there amongst around 5,000 fans, we weren’t really even given a curious look ,and the bloke next to Duncan even made a few jokes about how crap their kicker was to us.
Because of the past few nights, we crashed out early.
