Jan 30, 2010- Day Six
Hobart to Terraleah
Angie's alarm went off far too early, then mine 15 minutes later and finally Lachie's in order to time the showers. Everyone was ready in the opposite order with Angie feeling the need to tame her wild hair with a straightner. As only one lift was working Angie and I had to take the stairs to the top floor to find it. When we got downstairs there were a couple of people who were also going on our trip. Ang and I chatted to them whilst Lachie was mesmerized by Kim Possible playing on the tv. Our tour guide eventually showed up and turned out to be Dutch not Taswegian, crazy. Although we booked through Connections Tours, our tour is actually operated by "Under Downunder Tours' because Connections no longer runs tours in Tassie. This tour is much smaller than the last tour I took.We drive in a mini bus and have a total of 12 passengers.
Our first stop was the bustling markets at Salamanca. The markets are wonderful!I can't stress how much I love them and wish Canada had more!I bought a vegetarian noodle bowl and freshly squeezed juice with orange, coconut, kiwi and ginger.Lachie decided to go MIA and eventually met up with Ang and I with a scallop pie in hand.
After our bellies were full we wandered around the harbour front.We then caught a jet boat tour which was good fun, but not as extreme as my New Zealand jet boating.We saw a few fairy penguins and some jelly fish during the tour.
We then piled into the tour bus and headed northwest along the Derwent Valley toward Mt. Field National Park, Tasmania's first National Park. Here we had lunch at the visitor's café (sundried tomato, chicken and guacomole sandwich) and then ventured on a short walk through Giant Swamp Gums eventually leading to Russell Falls.
We then travelled further into the highlands to finish our day in Terraleah (aboriginal for Forrester Kangaroo).This town is quite literally in the middle of nowhere! Aside from having a pretty cool name (if I must say!), Terraleah is also the birthplace of the hydo-electric scheme in Tasmania.We stayed at a really nice lodge called the Terraleah Highland Village.Our whole tour was able to share a lodge building.I shared a room with Donna from England and Ang.For dinner the lodge cooked us lamb, mashed potatoes & veggies or fish and chips.Some of you may be surprised here…. Considering I don't favour lamb OR fish, I pushed my limits and opted to try some good 'ol Tassie fish and chips.Drum roll please.. I actually ate the whole plate!I guess fish isn't so bad (still nothing compared to chicken though!)After our relaxing dinner on the patio we headed into our lodge to watch Donna's skydive and bungy videos.This just reminded me of how badly I want to skydive!I may just have to add this to my list of things to do while downunder.
