After my jungle adventure I headed further round to Sabah's east coast to the town of Semporna. This is the jumping off point for the island of Sipidan which supposedly is one of the worlds top dive sites. As I've always wanted to learn to dive I figured I could do worse than learn here! Sadly I never actually got to go to Sipidan itself but dived the islands around it and it was still amazing. The course was 3 days, the 1st day in the classroom and then the next 2 in the water. There was just another American couple learning with me who were learning to dive for their honeymoon. Unfortunately she has a bit of a fear of water and found she just coldn't deal with being under the water. Felt really bad for her as she'd already suffered through a whole day in the classroom! Saw lots on the dives includign huge turtles which came up pretty close. The night I finished the course the hostel bar was holding a racenight where you bet fake money. I got persuaded to join in and won! (How could I not with a horse called Smelly Welly!) What I won was a free night dive. It was such an eerie experience but totally amazing too. Think I saw every type of crab under the sun!
The next day I flew out to KL and then up to Kota Bahru to get a boat out to the Perhentian Islands. They're on the east coast of Malaysia near the Thai border, and they're also paradise! I stayed on the smaller island on Coral Bay. The islandsare still relatively undeveloped. Everything runs on generators and you might not get 24 hour electricity. Water for showerd is only available between certain times, and the only way to really get around is by water taxi. It was absolutely perfect for lazing about an doing nothing except moving from the beach to the sea and back to the beach again! I went snorkelling for 1 day and it'sprobably the best place I've ever been. Saw huge turtles and sharks, not to mention swarms of fish of all different kinds. Tomorrow I head off into Thailand. I'll be really sad to leave paradise but I have a Full Moon party to get to!
