Law & Stu's Honeymoon Adventure
Greetings from New Zealand!
Well we finally arrived here on Friday 31th at 12.45pm (we're 13 hours ahead of you guys) after 3 gruelling flights. Well I say gruelling... I managed to fall asleep prior to take off on 2 of the flights uttering the words "wake me when the food arrives" to poor Stu who was wide awake for the whole trip! "Never again" was all he could say every time I woke briefly for a comfort break!
Tat aside we arrived to a gloriously sunny afternoon and promptly caught the first bus from the airport to our hostel. The transfer took approx. 50 mins when the bus pulled up outside the concrete jungle we were to call home for the next 3 nights. Our hostel is on Queen Street which is the busiest street in Auckland - that siad, its no Oxford Street (thank god!). We checked in and were shown to our room on the 7th floor. As I turned the key in the lock I looked at Stu and said "dont expect the Ritz".... boy what a statement! Our room, which we have now affectionately called "The Whole" is quite literally 4 walls, no windows, no warbrode, no draws just a bed and a fridge that's older that Stu... now thats saying something cos Stu's most definitely the oldest person in the building! Okay so we dumped our bags, took a shower (in the shared bathroom!), and hit the town.
WOW, what can I say... Auckland is amazing, who cares that we're stuck in "The Whole" for 3 nights, we wont be doing anything but sleeping there anyway! Auckland is just fab... really clean and tidy, loads of people but it never seems too busy and the bars around the harbour are amazing! So that afternoon we hit the bars and tasted some local living! At our 3rd bar we started to chat to Rick & Suzi two local NZer's who were out celebrating their engagement with friends.... soon enough me & Stu were joining in the celebrations and drinking the night away! We left Rick & Suzi at about 11pm and headed back to "The Whole", as we arrived we noticed a club next door to the hostel so decided to go in... this was our first taste of backpacker nightlife and was certainly something we'd never experienced before! So we got back to "The Whole" very late that evening feeling ever so drunk and suffering with jet lag..... not good, I must have woke about 4 times that night needing liquid refreshment and my head was spinning!! We woke the next day at 7.30am (yeah 7.30am) and made it our mission to be out of "The Whole" within 30mins to grab some well needed breakfast. And thats what we did. We spent the whole day out in the fresh air soaking up the sun and taking in the scenery. Not sure how warm it is but its hot - a bit like a really hot day in the UK with a nice breeze. We went to the Sky Tower in the afternoon and Stu almost concered his fear of heights by stepping on the clear glass bottom and leaning against the glass wall.... sounds tame but it really was quite scary! After the Sky Tower we went to Victoria Park for a pick nick then cruised round the shops along Queen Street and finally back down to the Harbour for some dinner and drinks. We didnt have a late one, we were back by about 11.30pm but here I am sitting at the onsite internet cafe' unable to sleep, my body clock is all over the place - perhaps its a result of the hours of sleep I had on the plane, I dont know but either way Stu is sound asleep and im wide awake.... its 4.35am as I type this so apologies for the tripe that may be coming out!
So im gonna go back to bad and see if I can get some shut eye - tomorrow (or should I say today), we are going to Misson Bay Beach which is about a 15 min drive from where we are. The following day we pick up our campervan and head south.
Missing ya loads x
