So agter a c*** up with our booking for the slow boat, it turned out that insetad of leaving Chaing Mai at midday we left at 9pm. Our bus driver had no idea what he was doing, the roads were so so windy, and he was all over the place, mostly on the wrong side fo the road, so even though we were all shattered we didnt manage much sleep, well apast from Vicky who can sleep through anything. Anyway after lots of being trown about and a cuople of acaes of travel sickness we reached our destaintion, with only 4 hrs to go till we had to be at the border to apply for Visas.
I got seperated from everyone and ended up doing the crossing alone, but sucessfully got my visa and caught up with the others. We then awited for about 2&1/2 hours in the sun for the boat, (and charlotte) to turn up, we had been tld that the boat was leaving at 10, and at 12.00 we were still waiting as apparently the police had reatainde some peoples passports. Laos time was already appearing to be twice as slow as Thai time and we hadnt even gone anywhere.
The boat was a wooden boat, with minibus seats on it as seating, but was fairly comfortable. the most important factor was the bar at the back of the boat, stocked with Beer Laos, which being as we were entering a new counrty, would be rude not to sample! The scenery was beautiful, most of the country is totally untouched, we went for hours without seein any sign of life on the river banks. Got chatting to more and more people on the boat, all of whom were doing the same thing as us all. We then spent all of Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng with them, the group is just constantly growing! When we stopped over for the night we were greeted by loads od kids offering to take our bags, men asking whether we had accomadation for the night, and shockingly kids offering us opium for sale.
The next day on the slow boat was Jamies birthday, so when we eventually arrived in Laung Prabang, we got ready and all headd out for dinner ( apart from charlotte as she had been ill for the previous night and the whole, boat journey) After dinner we went to explore the bars, and found ut that everything closed at 11pm. so when 11pm came we headed to what the locals had tld us was the only place remaining open, the local night club. Hahahahah waht a night! To begin with we were the only westerners i there, the club was very very dark, with big tin bins for tabls, and basically full of prostitutes adn lady boys, mixed in with a few normal looking locals!
The next day we went up to to higest point in Luang Prabang to a temple, to watch the sunset, then out for drinks at a bar that a few of the girls had discovered along the river front which was a really nice bar. thught i must admit I'm over the novelty of sitting on the floor now, a chair would be lovely thanks!
The nxt day we all met for breakfast and decided to organise our own trip to the waterfalls, so off we went. There were 14 of us so we really did resemble a school trip. The highlight of the waterfall was that while some where on the rope swing, a tiny chinese woman came over and said that she wanted to do it but couldnt swim (?!) and would the boys catch her, so in went scott & Joe, floowed by the non swimmer who was launching herself into a rather deep pool at the bottom of a waterfall! Anyhow the lads struggled slightly but became heroes whent he woman got back onto dry land safely!
8 of us moving onto Vang Vieng tomorrow for tubing...excited :)
