This morning we took advantage of the late check-out time at the campsite (1pm!) and slept til 10am! We had been woken up in the night receiving important texts from home regarding two family members who were in hospital, and were greatly relieved to hear everything was ok with both of them :)
We decided we'd do our second brewery tour today at DB Brewery just outside Timaru, but we were cutting it fine to get there in time after leaving the site at 11am. Matters got worse, when we got lost driving out of Christchurch! Despite our best efforts, we arrived late for the tour...and then couldn't find the brewery, so we gave up!
By this time we were getting hungry so we parked up and decided to have lunch at a local Monteith's brewery bar. The weather was sunny so we even sat outside! After lunch, we walked to the Souuth Cantebury Museum (free!) and saw a very interesting exhibition about Richard Pearse, a NZ early aviator who is reckoned to have flown a plane even before the Wright brothers (by a few months!) according to eyewitnesses of his test flights. Upstairs, there were displays of pioneers' daily lives and how they ran their households - it sounded like lots of hard work!
We walked back to the van then drove to our campsite for the night, at Glenmark Holiday Park, just outside of town. We sat and watched TV for a few hours (Australian Masterchef of course!) then at 7pm headed back to town to the pub we'd been to earlier. We watched the Scotland v Georgia game (both upcoming opponents of England) and chatted to the barmaids. After the match, we were quite hungry as we hadn't eaten since lunch, so we stopped at a garage and got a burger each from Burger King, and some chocolate from the garage! Back at the site, we watched a UK channel 4 documentary about a morbidly obese woman having weight loss surgery...while eating our chocolate!
