What a busy week this has been! After Maine we headed down to Boston and stayed in the very old traditional Omni Parker Hotel. Boston creme pie originated at this grand hotel. Our first day in Boston we met with Mitch for lunch then a little later for a run along the Charles River. It was cold, windy, and beautiful outside. We met Mitch for dinner on Charles Street off of Beacon Street. It was a very quaint charming area of Boston. We found an italian restaurant and enjoyed our time talking and great food. It is a good thing we are walking a lot, running, and doing Yoga often!
We flew out the next day to visit my first cousin on my Mom's side who lives in Manalapan, Florida, which is immediately south of Palm Beach. We rented a car and drove to her house which showcases the Atlantic Ocean across the street and the Intercoastal Waterway behind their house. It was a wonderful 5 days with her and her husband. We were active everyday with warm weather around 70 degrees. I, Laura had my first golf lesson with my cousin and a golf Pro. Then we all went out on the golf course for a fun game. It was a great time! We had one more day on the course and spent the rest of the time going to an opera guild luncheon, Miami Ballet, saw "Noah" at an Imax theatre, more great meals, and getting in some type of workout everyday. Yoga on the lawn was wonderful along with swimming in her pool daily that overlooked the ocean. It was so nice to reconnect with my cousin and her husband.
Leaving warm sunny Florida for cold rainy Boston? Oh well, it is all good! We stayed at the Omni Parker again because you can get awesome rates on Travelocity. We are back in Boston and met Mitch again for dinner in a very cool wine bar in Beacon Hill.
Historian Gary's, happily unemployed veterinarian and practicing irresponsibility now, provides insights on the Omni Parker Hotel: 150 years as America's longest continuously operating hotel. JFK made his first public speech in it's Press Room, he also announced his candidacy for US Congress, and also had his bachelor party in this hotel. In it's famous restaurant, the Parker House, he proposed to Jacqueline. Malcolm Little, aka Malcolm X, was
a busboy in the early 40's. Ho Chi Minh, yes that famous ruler of China, was a mere pastry chef in Parker's from 1911-1913. Boston Creme Pie was created in Parker's in 1867 and is the official Massachusetts state desert.
The term "Scrod," meaning "catch of the day" was also coined at Parker's. Also in this restaurant, Longfellow drafted "Paul Revere's Ride," the idea for the Atlantic Monthly magazine was born, and Dickens gave his first American reading of "A Christmas Carol. Omni is named Official Best Historic Hotel in Massachusetts, top 10 historic hotels in US and Parker's as Boston's most iconic restaurant and one of the best in US. Thought you'd be interested in knowing..............
I've conscripted Gary to write the next blog and discuss Maine, why we love it and a little of it's history in the next blog. Today, monday, was a rainy cold day but we made the best of it. Worked out, Gary went to Mass. General Hospital's Museum of Medical History and Innovation and we're now sitting in the lobby relaxing. More fun tomorrow:-)
