A field of coca plants
Coca is widely grown in Peru but, the government controls production strictly: growers are limited to 10 hectares only and often are forced to sell their produce to the government for a low price. Sometimes, growers risk fines and jail to smuggle their goods to local markets where they can make up to three times as much money from sales.
