So. We're here! We've arrived in Delhi, and this is our third day. It feels like, every day, we've become a little less naive and have enjoyed it a little bit more. Although, where Delhi's concerned, perhaps "enjoy" isn't really the right word. It is truly crazy. The two guys in the taxi from the airport thought it would be nice to start a casual chat about the awful gang rape - just the thing to relax us into our journey... Then they tried to drop us in a mystery area of the city, after confusingly claiming that it was neither possible to drive nor to walk in the area we wanted. What can you do with advice like that? Nonsense is sort of a trump card.
Anyway, we eventually made our own way to the Paharganj area of the city (a rough but sort of charming backpacker area) and have nestled into a friendly little hotel/hostel to try to get our tiny minds round this place. Yesterday's highlight was having a cuppa in a hugely posh Raj-era hotel (we're easing ourselves in gently). Today we visited the slightly boring National Museum and an amazing 18th-century observatory that was like a massive, tatty, red-brick playground and whose name in Hindi loosely means "abracadabra". This evening's dinner ended with a fudge-y kind of sweet that was made out of Horlicks. Tomorrow we hope to visit this cool-sounding charity where you can take a tour with a former street kid and the money goes to their many worthy causes. I say "hope" because it's a lot to assume that our ideas and plans will bear any relation to what actually happens.
We'll be in Delhi for a few more days at least, trying to figure out where to go next, and how the hell to get there.
