Hello!!
I have been way behind on my travel updates and am now in Cambodia! Before here I went back to Koh Samui and bangkok and have been in cambodia since the 11th!
So backtracking, we went back to koh samui after the full moon party, wanted to go to koh tao but it seemed like an expensive place to stay so we went to samui. This time it was mostly chilling out on the beach for the last time making sure we had a good tan to go home with! We did have a day trip to koh tao for snorkelling and I loved it so much!!! I've never done snorkelling before and it was just awesome to see the fish swimming around my feet and seeing life under the sea! Koh Tao is so beautiful too, I wish we could've stayed there - seems so much nicer than the other islands - the water is the most gorgeous colour blue!
After samui we headed up to Bangkok again for 2days and we went to the cinema (Alice in wonderland at an imax cinema =amazing!) and met an awesome bunch of people at the hostel and spent both nights sitting outside the hostel drinking and chatting!
When we got to the border of cambodia it was immediately different from thailand! Its taken a while to get used to, well actually i'm still not really used to it. There are so many beggers here and its really in your face. So many people with missing limbs and kids walking around begging for food and stuff - its pretty hard hitting! But the people here have suffered so much as we learnt more and more.
Our first full day in phnom penh we were joined by a japanese guy called Kohei that we met in a taxi the night before. (he has been with us ever since too) We went to tuol sleng genocide museum, which was a school that was used as a prison during the khmer rouge regime. Inside there are hundreds of photos of the people (men, women and children) that were held and killed there, and stories of people from around the time. It was really really sad and to think it only happend in 1975 just seems crazy!
After that we went to the killing fields which is where thousands of people were killed and buried. There is a big monument there with some of the bones and clothes of the victims inside - pretty awful. We bought some flowers and incense and placed them on the monument. It was a pretty grim day but I think its important to understand whats happened to the people here so I'm glad we went! To lighten the mood we ended the day looking around one of the many huge markets and ended up in a restaurant where steve got kohei drunk! (kohei said japanese guys normally drinkabout 3/4 beers but I think kohei had about 7! He did not feel well the next day - stephen is a bad influence!)
The next day we went to wat phnom where we saw some crazy monkeys that stole a blow up power ranger toy from a little kid, followed by any scrap of food they could get hold of from another womans bag - crazy things!! After that we went to the grand palace which was so strange to see in the middle of so much povety! But it was imaculate and beautiful and a happier change from yesterday!
We used tuk tuks here for the first time and they were pretty cool! They are different from the ones in bangkok though so still need to experience that! But the drivers are just as insane - we spent way too much time driving on the wrong side of the road heading straight for the oncoming traffic! I'm not gonna lie - I was pretty scared! But its all fun and games really!
