Stef's Sarah's, and Lauren's European Adventure!
Yesterday Barcelona, today Madrid!
Spain is cool, but surprisingly we have been eating a lot of mexican food, haha. Today we went to the Puerta del Sol square to see the Bear and Strawberry Tree statue that is the emblem of Madrid. Then we went to the Plaza Mayor which was the sight of bullfights, and the Inquisition. After sitting in the plaza for a bit, we walked over to the Palacio Real, which is one of the most amazing palaces in europe! We walked through all the rooms, the most impressive of which i thought was the Throne Room. here is a link to a picture of it: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Palacio-real-de-madrid-sala-de-tronos.jpg
it was pretty amazing! There was also a really impressive room covered entirely in porcelain. And grandma, we saw the Goya paintings! Lauren commented on the irony of the fact that these royals were living in such ornate luxury while so many of their people were living in poverty. Craziness! After leaving the palace, we went for lunch (mexican!) and then went to see the Reina Sofia Modern Art Center. There were many Picassos and a roomful of Dalis (yes kara, i know you're jealous!). Dali has always been a favorite of mine, and i've really taken a liking to Picasso since we went to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, so that was really neat to see today. Unfortunately, the main Picasso work, Guernica, was closed, and that was really disappointing. In true Spanish fashion, we came back to the hostel to siesta, and are planning where we want to daytrip to tomorrow!
LOVE!!
