After signing for my Royal Enfield Bullet (all damages will be paid for) all 30 of us hit the road in Shimla. There are no rules on the road and the cows do their own thing. You're not allowed to hit cows, it's bad juju. Also, there are a lot of Indians and they love walking in the road. With all this, it being 25 degrees, me wearing full motorbiking kit and the bike stalling it wasn't long before I was sweating like a b',ta&d. After that we went off road up the side of a mountain through the cloud base. Lots of mud, potholes and loose gravel - a quick intro to off roading given my 3 months bike experience. After stopping for a cup of chai we joined the main inter-Tibet highway. Unfortunately most of the highway has been washed away so it was mostly bumps and blind bends. You've got to watch out for cows and packs of dogs as they tend to wander along the main roads. I did see a dog try to take on a cow in a dog-cow fight. We made it to our first overnight stop which is surprisingly civilised although at 2,700 metres you get out of breath climbing the stairs. I was slightly heartened by the fact that one of the guys here (Andreas) only has one leg although he's better at riding the bike that I am. Almost used to the back brake being on the wrong side and the gears being upside down. We have a very rude 5.30 start tomorrow for a 200+ Km ride.
