Once again we were on another bus and this was the topic of conversation, between sleeping, all the way to Glasgow. After some discussion we worked out that it was our 30th long distance bus for this trip. Look out.
Once arriving, we gathered our backpacks and hit the streets trying to find the car rental agency and were immediately introduced to the Scots. We must have looked lost as a lady having a dart, asked us where we were trying to get to. Well we think that is what she asked us, but couldn't understand a word she said. We followed the directions and made it to the car rental and before we knew it, we were driving up the M8 to Fort William and the Scottish Highlands.
What a fabulous part of the world. The scenery was unlike anything we have seen before, made even more special by the sunshine. The drive up was great fun, driving along narrow, windy roads on the banks of beautiful lakes or Lochs as the Scots call them.
We arrived in Fort William which is a little town in the Nevis range. We climbed out of the car and were surrounded by amazing snow capped mountains and Ben Nevis, UK's tallest mountain (well maybe not come 18 September)!
We were up early the next day to the visitors centre at the base of Ben Nevis to look into some hiking. We were informed in a very thick accent not to trek one of the paths as it was "very boggy", which was repeated by us numerous times throughout the day.
We setout on a easy trek to the main waterfall with leftover dinner as lunch and wearing only a t-shirt. It was a great walk with some spectacular views of the highlands. The waterfall was impressive and I was able to walk right underneath it.
That night after our third meal of pasta in a row, we decided we would tackle Ben Nevis in the morning, then drive up to Inverness in the afternoon. It was another sunny day with no clouds in sight. We hit the trail along with thousands others. It is not a long climb but tough in sections as the steps are very uneven in size. We were only able to get 3/4 of the way up as the path was covered in snow/ice and we were unable to climb it. We were however given amazing views of the Nevis range, lochs, Fort William and the surrounding peaks.
Upon reaching the bottom we jumped into the car and drove to a small town west of Inverness called Strathpeffer. We used this as our base for the next two days as we drove up the coast and explored the Scottish countryside. We visited the beach on a sunny day and everyone was out swimming though it was 11 degrees! Before we knew it, our time was up so we hit the road again to drop the car off in Glasgow and then jumped on a train bound for Edinburgh.
What can we say about Edinburgh. What a fantastic city. Amazing history especially with the castle and the old town. Was great to do the walking tour and get an understanding of the history and the complications between scotland and England. We spent 3 days exploring the city and experiencing some traditional scottish weather ie it was pissing down. One of the things that impressed us the most is the resilience of the scots and how they dont let the rain stop them. We both struggled with only two days of rain hahaha.
Next stop Liverpool............ C'mon you Reds
