Yet another great German invention - mitfahrgelenheit (check out that spelling Alice!). Its a ride share website so you can get in touch with people going the same way as you. Its good for the traveller as its cheaper and you meet people. Good for the driver as he/she gets help with petrol costs and someone to chat to. And I think good for the environment as less people drive themselves as its so easy to find someone who is going. So far I have travelled to Amsterdam with an Italian guy, his Portuguese wife and screaming but cute 3 month old Leonardo. Also to Berlin in a car with the seats that tilt inwards so you squish the person in the middle (not to mention the fact the fact that it was basically an oven). But its a great way to meet people and much more fun than sitting on the train by yourself and when I got to Berlin I had 3 personal tour guides to point out things from the window!
So, I'm now in Berlin. I would describe the city itself but more importanty I think I should describe my lovely hostel room. Deciding to be a nana I was in bed and reading by ten and by midnight people were still opening and slamming the locker doors, chatting loudly and having showers etc. By one it was getting pretty quite but the windows had to be shut because of the mosquitos (not my choice, I would pick fresh air over non maleria ridden mossies personally) which is pretty gross on a hot night with 8 people in a fairly small room. By 2 everyone was asleep but me. This wasn't because the person directly next to me snored like some kind of train engine, or because the room smelled of bodies in yet another oven. No, this time it was because someone in the room was sick.
Not just a bit sick but the coughing every minute and worst of all that hideous sniffing noise. The noise when you don't want to blow your nose (even though you ReALLY need to) so you sniff and it makes the worlds most DISGUSTING sound. So pretty much I slept for a total of one hour and 15 mins (only because at about half seven this morning the guy left) but I as someone who needs their sleep I am pretty sure I am the grumpiest person in Berlin.
Honestly, I would pick to have the thunderous snorer from my safari, the Antarticaness of Mt Kenya lodges, the sagging beds of West Africa and the early morning mosque in Bujumbura (but maybe not the loud couple in the tent next to mine in Holland) all combined rather than the noise I was forced to listen to last night.
Off to by the most extreme protection ear plugs I can find...
