Day 20 Monday 14th May
25 km 250 up and 285 down
Looked like rain but cleared. Wonderful day Jean and I smashed it today.
We were unable to reserve ahead at our preferred distance and people were very agitated about not having a bed so the hospitaliero booked us at the next village. So we started at 7:30 with a march up the escarpment and then an equally steep drop to the valley floor.
Had a long start to the day with 12kms before second breakfast. Only coffee as no food available went to a supermarket and bought some yoghurt and an orange and some crispy biscuits. Ate in a park stocked up with water and headed off again. Caught up with the German family Daniel mum and Gandma. Daniel is only five and yesterday he walked ten kms. He has been walking for two weeks now so has built some stamina. Mum has a sling if needed Grandma carries most of the gear they are very proud of him and this is their last chance as he goes to school at six. Two hours later after walking through mostly grassland we stopped for tortilla and cafe con leche 5E. Best coffee I have had in two days.
Then off on the last stretch an extra 5.8kms. Very flat and a lot of it along a canal. When we got to Frómista our destination turns out Albergue Betenia is off the Camino as far as you can go and still be in Frómista. Following GPS feeling hot and a teensy bit grumpy. Then we are there we buzz the intercom up to the apartment and down comes Betenia. She is so kind. Go and get settled would you like a cup of tea. Stress falls away there are two beds for Jean and I and a set of bunks for two other women Natitharny from North of Spain and Anna from Brazil. Bathroom and kitchen living area facing west.
Went out for some essential supplies we can use anything in the apartment. We will cook some eggs to take tomorrow.
