Hey guys.
apologies for the lack of contact for a bit! Been keeping really busy! I was in sydney up until this sunday - getting back from the blue mountains to sydney really felt like coming home - i made some amazing friends there and i apologise for not writing sooner but there isn't too much to report on. I went out every night with everyone - the last night we went to the rocks (a trendy downtown area right by the harbour bridge) for an amazing last night out. I also met with the guy that sponsored me to come out here for lunch at the rocks and i did really well as one of my friends works at a bar in darling harbous called Crinitis. It was amazing with a Ducati bike on the bar and rooftop seats overlooking the harbour which is stunning at night - i think Darling Harbour is much better than Circular Quay (the harbour with the opera house) at night. But we managed to get there at 7pm and drink 150 dollars worth of cocktails before realising it was half 11 we hadn't eaten any dinner and everyone was waiting for us back at the hostel! So those nights out really helped me to get a feel of Sydney which was great. During the days we also went to Hyde Park (they stole the name i know!) which was gorgeous in the sun :) as well as exploring the rest of China town that our hostel backs onto.
After an incredible time in Sydney however i felt that it was time to move on or i would never leave the city at all. It was very hard actually to leave people i had such a connection with and i miss the nights we would all chip in and cook noodles for dinner! I have definitely made some friends for life there and they are all still in contact now checking up on me - i was very lucky that i found such a lovely and trustworthy group of friends who really made the first part of my journey easy!
Sadly i had to go and so left on a greyhound bus and travelled overnight up the coast. If i had more time and money i would have stopped in some of the typical backpacker places such as port macquarie etc but i didn't so i got the overnight bus (6pm to 6am) up to Byron Bay - the renowned surfer and hippy town!! The bus journey wasn't actually all too bad and i managed to get a fair amount of sleep however after arriving in byron at half 6 in the morning i was greet not ten minutes in by someone offering me weed - literally what is written in the guidebook and i knew i had therefore definitely arrived!!
So to quickly catch you up - i met some lovely people here too but it took a while. I am finding that there are always going to be lows and highs to travelling alone. On the one hand it is perfect for meeting new people as well as being able to decide where and when to go places and not have to meet other peoples needs. I am loving that aspect. But at the same time each new place you go once again you are back to square one and have to make friends all over again which can be incredibly lonely some of the time - expecially in hostels during the day! But i made friends with one german girl and a swedish girl who were staying in my room - this was brilliant as our countries became our nicknames. . . for example sweden would finish her drink, then i would and we would joke that germany couldn't compete with our drinking!
It was perfect though as we all got on really well so the first two days i was here (supposedly chasing the sun up the eastern coast) it chucked it down with rain and we had tropical thunderstorms!! But the sun finally came out and i got to exploring the town which is really unique - reminds me slightly of a more colouirful camden with a bit of brighton and glastonbury thrown in on the side! So the first day i went on a 3 hour hike around one part of the bay which is ountainous and climbed up to the lighthouse where you get the typical postcard view of the bay which was just stunning and a real workout in the heat!! Then followed by singing kareoke with everyone all night in the bar - brilliant fun! And catching you up to today i had my first surf lesson. Me and Conny (the girl from germany) went for our first lesson for 60 dollars which included the board and wetsuit hire - pretty reasonable as you can really get ripped off out here. Anyway the guide "gaz" was so good he got us both up first time as well as teaching us all the correct techniques we learnt first on the white crests of the waves. Then we learnt all about the speed slowing up a board and speeding it up to accommodate with the speed of the wave. And finally he taught us to ride the green wave which is the bit right before the crest that you see all the pro surfers riding which was an aweomse adrenaline rush as it speeds you up and the board points nose down and you shoot down the wave - they were perfect today for beginners and i have spend the rest of the two days here on the beach just generally loving life! Tomorrow and the next couple of days there is a big storm headed up the coast which is in sydney right now so the waves here are meant to be record breaking so we're going to the best beach to watch surfers who have flocked here from all over the country surf!
Am sorry if the blog is a bit jumbled!! And i will try to write sligfhtly more regularly i just didn't want to keep writing the same thing! I hope you're all ok not much longer till i'm back which is scary as this trip has just flown by. Sorry for not missing England! Lots of love though xxx
