So after a little flight drama we arrived in Valencia to get our La Tomitina on. We partied with the fanatics for a few days and checked out the local beaches. On the 31st August we boarded a bus (very hung over, possibly still drunk) to Bunol, a small village about an hour from Valencia. The festival involves a pole that is covered in fat and someone needs to climb to the top to get the ham (I know - WTF right?). Anyway, after the ham had been got, people were jammed in the streets waiting for 5 tomato loaded trucks to pass through. We were in a little plaza so it wasn't quite as packed but when I lost the girls and made my way to the street somehow, it was crushing, to say the least. The festival only lasted about an hour or so, and tomatos were not the only thing that was being thrown. Shirts were ripped off, shoes lost, pockets picked and anything that could be thrown was thrown (including buckets of pee). The festival was an experience, which I am happy to say that I have done, however, would not be in a hurry to do it again.
