I have a dirty little secret. I actually really don't like flying. Which may surprise you a bit as I've alredy taken 8 flights before the third month of the year is out but it's true. I hate it. And ive narrowed it down to the taking off part. The part where I cant help but imagine all the whirring noises to suddenly cease, the engines to cut out and the plane to fall like a rock from the sky and splinter on the airport below. Once we've taken off, however, I usually quite like the flight. Plane food actually really excites me and ispent that first hour or so before they wheel out the carts fantasizing about what might be under than tin foil. Its not so much the taste as that excitement. Plus the free wine (which this time I was able to take full advantage of!).
Anyway, I arrived in Bangkok at midnight and took a taxi to my hostel which was very nice but a bit out of the way and I slept like a log and missed breakfast. Then, didn't really meet anyone the next day so i booked a bus ticket up to Chiang Mai in the North for that night and took myself off to the Koh Sahn Road which was crazy, sold amazing Pad Thai, tempted me to buy a million things I didn't need although I did manage to resist buying all but a bikini which i totally needed anyway.
The Bus to Chiang Mai was HORRIBLE. I didnt' sleep a wink, got told to eat coin shaped bits of pork fat with watery rice and got cold in the air conditioning. To top it off, we arrived at 4am rather than the 6.30am we were promised. Got a tuk tuk to the hostel I had booked with another girl i met on the bus and it was all locked up. I had to run abck to the main road and phone the hostel repeatedly until someone let us in. but even when they gave us a bed i couldnt sleep so i got up and found out here is a place called Tiger Kingdom up here!
So we all dashed off to this zoo/sanctuary thing and paid about a tenner to play with baby tigers and lions. it was BRILLIANT. the tigers were adorable and we could rub their tummies and m and things. They were actually quite big though so we had to stay away from their faces instead they tried to bite our hands off in play. Then after thatwe spied month and ahalf old lion cubs and of course had to go in and play with them too which was great cos they were tiny and felt like lambs and one sat on my knee for a while (photos on facebook). then we went off to the elephant sactuary...
where it was Thai Elephant Day! So there was a big fair and food stalls and even food stalls for the elephants so i bought some bananas and sugar cane and fed them and got a hug from an elephant. then they did a massive parade which ended with the elephants getting their own buffet which was a big table made out of trees covered in fruits like bananas and watermelon. those lucky things.
the enxt day a few of us from the hostel (which is a great place incidently!) took a cooking course which involved making 5 thai dishes including curry paste and the best curry ihave ever had in my life = yellow curry with potatoes and chicken). The woman runinng it was lovely and gave us a recipie book which i am determined to show off my skills using to everybody when i get home! form an orderly queue.
have also been to lots of markets and have bought lots of things that area mazingly cheap for what they are but have all added up to rather more than i probably should have spent. although i do have some excellent fishermans pants (trousers) to shwo for it.
in short: thailand is great.
