Our bus arrived in Battambang on a scorcher of an afternoon on Tuesday 14 August. Once again we were droppped at the bus company's office (not the bus station) which is not on any maps, so fortunately some tuk-tuk driver offered to take us to a hotel in town for free :-) We didn't like the first one, but he took us to another one afterwards which was cool, so we got settled and then headed into town to explore. Battambang doesn't really have too much going for it - there are a few interesting-ish sights in the surrounding countryside, but not much in the town itself. We took a stroll along the river and then had a delicious dinner and milkshake at a place called The White Rose - thanks Lyndal for the heads-up :-)
Wednesday Monique woke up feeling less than hundreds, so we decided to just take it easy. We slept in a bit and then found a coffee shop where we had some cake in celebration of Jason's (Kevin's brother) brithday. Afterwards we headed back to the room where Monique had a nap and Kevin did a bit of admin stuff. That evening, once it had cooled down a bit, we headed out for a bit of a frustrating but ultimately quite tasty dinner.
Thursday we decided to walk accross town to have lunch at the Green Mango Cafe - an NGO run by an American chef who provides at-risk girls with training in the food industry. Once again it was boiling so the walking was slow going, but it served well to work up a hearty appetite :-) We took advantage of the wifi and air-con'd room to do a bit of admin, before making the long slog home. That evening we hung out at this cool little place called Sunrise Cafe, just chilling and watching life go by. We were having such a great time that it wasn't until late when we finally went back to the room to pack.
Friday we were up at 5am to catch our bus to Bangkok. The bus was late so we ended up waiting around for like an hour before we were able to board the puke-smelling bus :-/ A long, bumpy ride and a wild, free-for-all border crossing later we were back in Thailand. The difference was immediately obvious - road markings on the roads and no litter!! We crammed into our mini-bus and settled down for the 3.5 hour journey from Poipet to Bangkok. Our driver was even kind enough to drop us right outside the train station :-) We had a bit of time to kill, so we went accross the road to a coffee shop where Kevin got mauled by a blind cat :-/ (turns out he doesn't like to be touched.) We grabbed a last bite to eat at the station and then boarded our train to Sarat Thani on our way to da islands maan!
