I remember the precise moment when I first thought "Got to go to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games". I was in the Olympic Park soaking in the buzz of London 2012 and chatting to a Scottish Games Maker. We were comparing notes about how brilliant it all was and saying how we wished we could do it all again. She said "I'm going to put in for the Commonwealth Games. They're going to be in Glasgow in 2014 ….. why don't you?". The rest as they say is history. And in exactly a week from now I'll have started my first shift there.
I wasn't sure about doing a blog again ……. things are going to be a bit different this time. No long train journey home to write my notes of the day. No settled daytime shifts. And no Olympic Park to wander around for hours on end taking photographs. Instead, this time I'll be driving over from Bo'ness to Glasgow every day, I'll be a driver stuck in a car, no crowds to mingle with and the shifts I've got to work are all over the place. At least that's how it looks at the moment.
But who knows what the next few weeks will bring? Who knows who will be in my car? And who knows how many will end up at the place they wanted to be? I've been up to Glasgow quite a few times now and could already tell you how I was refused entry to a Glasgow city centre pub "because you don't meet our dress code". Or the memorable journey back on the Megabus overnight sleeper when I spent the entire eight hours crushed up against the side of a bus with a fat man in the bunk beside me and spilling his fatness onto most of my side.
And I'm sure there'll be the same buzz and colour as there was in London. The same excitement and smiles everywhere. I'm looking at my Clydesider uniform now. Very similar to the Games Maker although mainly red. No trainers this time so the London 2012 pair will get another outing. But something we weren't given in London; a sturdy and rather thick waterproof …… wonder why?
I hope you can join me on my Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games journey. Back soon folks …….
