The first task i needed to do when arriving in New Zealand was to do some laundry. After a week in america and 2 weeks in hot, damp Fiji, my washing was starting to become a bio-hazard. Oh how i miss communal laundry facilities (they were the exact machines used at university) with the same queue issues and random pants everywhere.
The first day i wake up (with a sore throat) and go on a free tour around the city by Stray (similar to Kiwi Experience, bus tours around the country with perky staff and youths) we get to the Sky Tower (in the picture) the guide asks a question, and Jeremy (who reminds me of Chief) answers correctly and wins a jump from the top there and then! Gosh, good job i wasn't listening and didn't know the answer. Auckland was also rainy, and we drove round the rest of the city, and we get a free walk across the underside of the bridge to the bungy area where some people did it. No, i didn't do it. But comically they left a fat bird until the end as a finale.
Rather than book buses across the country with the aforementioned companies with perky youths as guides (couldn't be dealing with that first thing in the morning - "come on guys!", yes i'm a grumpy old bat) i booked 60 hours of bus journeys with Intercity the normal public transport system. So the next day headed north to Paihia.
