Oz Day 1: Trinity Beach, Cairns, Thursday 25th October
We left Heathrow an hour late on Monday at 11.00 pm, after spending 3 hours getting to the airport through London's rush hour. As you are all probably aware neither of us was looking forward to the flight and we were among the last passengers to board the plane. I had "checked-in" on the internet the night before, which saved us getting to the airport too early and that worked out fine. Anyway flights turned out to be "OK" but very long whichever way you look at it, and we didn't sleep, on any of the planes.
But now we are here, arriving at midday yesterday and were picked up from Cairns airport (a really lovely modern place, that is so laid-back) by Mika, who owns Trinity BnB the place I had booked for us to stay back in January. Mika is a really friendly, wonderful host, for whom nothing is too much trouble, we couldn't recommend a visit to her establishment highly enough . . . a real result in our minds . . . her web site does everything it says "on the tin".
Maureen went for a run at 6.00 this morning to stave off the jet lag, I didn't have any . . . so decided to give the run a miss and went for a dip in the pool instead. It is 1.30 pm and 32C and we have just come come back from Trinity Beach (water temp 26C) which is one of Cairn's premier beaches, there aren't enough superlatives to describe this place and if Carlsberg did locations, this would be it . . . unbelievable! I had real reservations about whether any destination would justify the journey but this mornings' walk on the beach was justification enough in itself. But tomorrow is another day and we see if it is as good . . . watch this space!
Day 2: Trinity Beach, Cairns, Friday 26th October
Day started early again, still can't sleep! Must be some kind of Australian guilty conscience or something! Had a swim in the pool and then breakfast . . . then down to the beach (200 yards) at about 9 a.m. and already 30C, it's really "warm" here. On arriving at the beach found out that it was closed on account of a crocodile being sighted, had a chat with the lifeguard who said it was due to the fact that it was their mating season (crocodile's)! Maureen asked me what would happen if you got caught in the water by one of them . . . I said to tell him that you had a headache. We got a lift into Cairns with Mika to spend the day there and as far as cities go it was really nice, they had spent a lot of money on the Esplanade with an enormous swimming pool at it's centre which was really popular with both locals and visitors alike . . . and unbelievable to us Brits was completely free. Met a couple of sisters in their 70s who had "made a little trip" up from Newcastle (not on Tyne) who were a really interesting way to spend a couple of hours in the shade, like most women of their age they had plenty to say and even more opinions, about almost everything. Spent a second evening at a local Greek Taverna for some more forbidden fruit.
