Bustling bonkers Bangkok
Boobs, booze, bars, boats, traffic, tuk tuks, farang pricing, temples, malls, food stalls, markets! Bangkok has everything you just need to know where to look. However we didn't always know where to look but stumbled upon some bloody brilliant times.
Our hostel was lovely and clean and in a great location for the sky train. We had travelled for nearly 2 days so booked a tour to the floating market had dinner and went to bed.
The floating markets were cool and the women who sold from their boats were brilliant to photograph. Everything was sold in boats along the canals, food, drink, hats and tacky souvenirs. Pulling your paddle boat in with their hooks so we could check out their stock.
The rest of the tour wasn't so successful being taken to unnecessary stops, elephant ride (elephants looked sad), a cobra show and a wood carving shop, all of which we had to pay extra to see and we didn't want to any of it so we stood around and then got back to the minivan. Had a lame lunch and then taken to Kanchuburi, River Kwai and left their for 2 hours. It was interesting to learn about The Death Railway but not worth the time we spent there and the traffic we got stuck in on the way home.
We still had a fantastic evening exploring Patpong the old red light district. We saw the worst pingpong show in the seediest of bars. The women looking bored wearing the least sexiest outfits; socks and slipper combo. We saw Thai boxing in the bar downstairs, I made friends with the dancers and did birthday shots. We went to a random bar and made friends with the staff for a Thai lock in. More birthday shots on the house and a birthday cake made out of a jacket potato and heart shaped watermelon. Topped off with a tuk tuk home. A great birthday to remember.
Nicole a canterbury head who has been living in Bangkok took us to a lovely beer garden that did delicious Thai food and a cool bar with miss matched plastic chairs that only served beer or whiskey. It was great being shown an area of Bangkok we wouldn't of found by ourselves.
We did a touristy trip along the river and saw the temples. We escaped some con artists ploys and got lost in Chinatown. Walked around the huge malls and surrounding markets. Ate good street food and lots of sticky rice. Went to an independent 60s cinema that only has one screen, (the farangs (non Asian foreigners) petitioned to keep open) and saw The Life of Pi a beautiful film.
Bangkok was lots of fun and we had a great time. It has a dark side and annoyances like most cities so best even when drunk to keep your wits about you. Thai's in Bangkok are always trying to make an extra buck out of westerners and it does become tiresome when trying to get a cab for a reasonable price or not being scammed into something like having to pay an extra 450 baht for a train ticket through an agency because the train is fully booked. However there are also wonderful Thai people in Bangkok who are always smiling and just want to get to know you and hope you have a good time. We experienced it all and had fun and that's all that matters!
