S: we arrived in La Serena after a night bus, and we found a beautiful hostel that was like a cottage in Wales. It was very quaint although very expensive but James did blag us a free breakfast. At breakfast we met Jacintha the house keeper, who was a sweet Chilean Lady who couldn't do enough for you. We had to make a couple of calls back to the UK so we said we would meet some guys we met at the beach.
J: we found the redundant lighthouse on the beach and the guys we were meeting. We decided to brave a dip and it was very very cold, we had a swim for a few minutes before I was concerned about my toes falling off. After we had a stroll along the beach and when walking back through the town with a couple Canadians; Daniel and Noah, we decided to cook dinner back at the hostel, with a few beers of course, we even got a bottle of whiskey for a treat.
Sam cooked a great meal and we played cards and enjoyed the evening. As Noah decided to go one-for-one on the drinks with me he got really rather drunk lol.
S: I had read that in the local archeology museum they had a Moai Head from Easter Island. We visited it and they are huge, but they really don't know why they were built there from the volcanic rocks. We visited the house of the president, Gabriel Gonzalez. Who was born in the town. We next decided to visit town of Coquimbo, on the bus to visit the fish market. We both had our first cerviche and it was brilliant, we both really enjoyed it even though it is only cooked by lemon juice and salt. Then we got a little bit braver and tried scallops and I thought they were disgusting so James and Dan finished those.
J: we all then walked out to the harbour behind the market and saw the biggest sea-lions! A local man had lots of fish heads that he was feeding them so they stayed close and it was like a show. He would throw a bucket full in the sea and they would pile on top of each other and barked like angry dogs, it was a randomly great find. Once back to our part of town we booked our bus tickets to head south the following day.
S: we had planned to leave the next day but we woke up to major flooding in the country. We had breakfast were Jacintha gave James extra as usual and went to the bus station. Our bus had been suspended until midnight, the only down fall was we had booked two buses back to back to get down the country. Once it had all been arranged we headed back to the hostel and used the time to upload photos to the blog. We again headed to the bus station at about 7pm and we were told if we had our bags we could go now, so we quickly headed back to the hostel but by the time we got back the bus had gone. So we waited for a few hours and the bus company changed our tickets again but we finally got on the bus at midnight to Santiago.
