From Cape Leeuwin I started out for the southern coast and the town of Walpole where the 'Valley of the Giants' is. This is giant tingle tree country. However I somewhat underestimated how long it would take me to get there. And after driving for about 2 hours only to get to the half-way point of Pemberton I was beginning to get concerned. I stopped in at the Visitor Information Centre in Pemberton and asked the wee woman how long it would take me to get to Walpole. She said another hour and 45 minutes! And last admissions to the tree-top walk were at 4.15pm and it was already 2.15 !! So I jumped back in the car - adamant that I didn't just drive 2 hours for nothing - and hared it down to Walpole, luckily arriving just in time. I then had a 4 hour drive back to Margaret River (in the pitch black) on single carriage roads! I took a wrong turn at one point and drove for 30kms in the wrong direction. I then couldn't find my way back out of the town I wasn't meant to be in! When I did finally make it onto the road I'd been looking for I noticed the Kangaroo warning sign - but never usually take note of them anyway. Turns out the roo's come out after dark and the road was just littered with them. Big ones too, and they are momentarily blinded by my full-beam lights and so just jump out onto the road not knowing where they're going. It was like the dodgems and I had to keep swerving violently to avoid hitting them. It is without doubt the most terrifying drive of my life! Anyway, I made it back to Margaret River in once piece!
