The Three Sisters. Legend has it, that three sisters, 'Meehni', 'Wimlah' and Gunnedoo' lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe. These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry. The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle. As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, their Father, Tyawan - a witchdoctor - from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to use his magic bone and turn his three daughters into stone, encased within the mountain, to protect them from any harm. He then buried the magic bone so that only he knew where it was and while he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was turned into a Lyre bird by Bunyip, a creature that lived in a black hole. And so the sisters have remained inside the mountain ever since. During our walk, the guide pointed to a Lyre bird which was scavenging about the forest floor. He said that the aboriginal people still believe that Tyawan is searching for his magic bone and that's what this and other Lyre birds are doing when you see them poking around in the ground.
