I was casually walking past the Hyde Park Barracks Museum one day and decided to go in. After paying my $10 I went in and spent over 2 hours looking around the various exhibits. It was really interesting. The Barracks are where the first convicts to Australia were sent and they lived and worked out there sentences here. I manged to learn a lot about the first convicts that arrived and what went on. Back in the day you would be sentenced to life for murder and also for stealing a horse. They sentenced children as young as 7 years old and I read about one 10 year old boy who was sent to Australia for 7 years for stealing a ribbon! Anyway, there was a database you could look up particular people on and I managed to find 3 people who originated in Greenock who were convicted for petty crimes and sent to Oz.
