The actual gallows where 44 men met their death up until 1984 when capital punishment was abolished in WA (the last state in Australia to do it). This noose, rather than strangling the person to death, is designed in such a way that it snaps their 3rd and 4th vertebrae and severs the spinal cord from the brain, in less than a second - quick and painless. Our guide explained that the only people present at the execution were the doctor, the judge that handed out the death sentence and 4 'postmen' who stood at each corner of the trapdoor to hold the prisoner steady. Often their knees would buckle or they would shake uncontrollably. Some even fainted, in which case they were placed in this chair and hung anyway.
