Hi all,
Firstly, sorry about the random photo of this sandboarder, we´ll upload our own soon.
After Santiago we went to Valparaiso, an amazing colonial port built on some ridiculously steep hills. They have public fenicular elevators to get you around the city. Anyone who has Mercury Falling by Sting, check out the song he wrote about the city. The houses are all bright colours and there are murals everywhere, it was really really cool. From there we went north to La Serena where we saw some penguins and seals on a boat trip round the Humbolt National Reserve islands. We also went to a local Rodeo where two men on horses chase a cow round a ring and try to hit it against a big cushion in the correct way (we never really got the hang of the points system). There were lots of moustaches and ponchos on display - very South American.
After La Serena we got an amazingly luxurious bus up to the Atacama Desert. On the bus we randomly met Mike and Patsy - some friends of my parents, which was pretty weird! Been to see some geysers and swim in a thermal pool today. Going into the desert with a guide tonight to do some stargazing with his beastly telescopes.
We leave here with Mike and Patsy on Wednesday for a 3 day 4WD tour into Bolivia to see more geysers, volcanoes, salt flats and strange coloured lagoons. Should be incredible.
Hope everyone´s well,
Matt and Katie xxx
PS we ate BBQ´d llama meat today, delicious.
