Hi all,
had a crazy last 2 weeks - the wind dropped in Greece and the sun stayed away so we decided to pack up a bit earlier than planned and go and see Croatia. We got the Ferry from Igoumenitsa, Greece to Bari in Italy, then from Bari to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Had a lovely day going around Dubrovnik town - famous for it's City walls and harbour side. Apparently it was shelled heavily during the conflicts in the last 20 years but we didn't see much evidence of it there. We spent most of the day there and the people were friendly, everyone spoke english which made things easy and the sunny weather made for a very chilled out day.
After Dubrovnik we spent another 4 days driving up the coast road north to Venice. The coast road in Croatia is stunning - huge mountains, sandy coves and 3 major national parks all off one central main road. It was great to be able to drive along and get to see a lot of the country. It reminded us a lot of the hebrides in western Scotland - we even had the rain! On our last night there it rained so hard we had to stop for the night at a motorway service station near Rijeka.
From there we went on to Venice, via Slovenia, for 2 nights and we had been told about a fab campsite called camping Fusina wvhich is on the mainland and has a view of Venice, plus a regular boat service to the City every hour. After some navigation issues we found it and spent 2 nights there, plus an evening and full day seeing the sights in Venice. We loved it - lots of wine and pizza was consumed.
From there we drove back into France and the Alps, stopping at an Aire (free stop for campers) in Chamonix. We drove through the Mont Blanc tunnel and were lucky enough to get quite a clear day so we could see the summit and the glacier - absoultely awesome. We went hiking for a day, and then carried on through France up to Belgium for a night. Unfortunately Steve had a nasty bout of food poisoning for a day and so after a sleepless night, bad weather etc we decided just to motor home. 2 long driving days took us up to Dunkerque and we managed to get on the 8pm ferry last night back to Dover and then up to Cambridge to stay with Steves dad.
So we are back home for a few weeks; and after a few mounds of washing, cleaning up and storing the 'van, catching up with family and friends and Steve completing his best man duties for Jack on Saturday, we will be off to Africa. Watch this space! I'll also try to upload some photos from the last 3 months so you can see what I've been on about here.
love n hugs,
Kathryn & Steve xx
