Hello from Sydney!
We've been here about a week now so I thought I'd drop you a note to say hello. We are living with Steve's brother Richard and his family in a suburb of the northern beaches called Warriewood - about 45 minute bus ride from the centre of the city. It's the posh bit of Sydney so very comfortable, and they have very kindly offered us their guest room until we get jobs / a flat of our own. It's been lovely spending some quality time with them as it's been 18 months since we were all together.
We have been to the beach every day since we got here and really love the lifestyle - sandy beaches round every corner, warm sunny days even though it's autumn, healthy living (even the beer is low carb!), chilled and laid back people, fantastic public facilities, great quality food, clean and friendly streets. Quite a contrast from Nepal and India!
However, as you would expect it is very expensive, so not feasible for us to stay long term unless we both get good jobs - similar or better than we had in the UK. The job and housing markets are buoyant though and I've applied for 3 jobs so far through an agency in town and have a chat with a career person tomorrow. Steve has gone off to get his hair cut today to transform him from happy, hippy traveller to corporate man - he was not happy about it!!
Rent prices here are very steep too - about $2000 a month if we want a small, 1 bed flat by the sea. We have found a fantastic area called "Dee Why" which is about a 30 minute bus ride from Sydney and right on a glorious beach, so have set our sites on getting something there. We will see what response we get to our job searches in a month and then review the plans - trying to think positive, but it's hard after 10 months! We have both been surprised at how lacking in confidence we are!
Anyway I'd better stop stalling and get on with job searching. Maybe time for 1 more cup of tea first though..... ;0))
