Hey
Well it hasn't been that long since I wrote my last blog, but internet here is free so I thought I might as well!
So after my last blog we travelled on down to an area called Millford Sound. It's a coastal section of a part of the country called fiordland in the South Island. So, as you might expect, it has really dramatic, steep sided valleys which have been flooded by sea water. The area is stunning. We took a boat trip out as it's pretty much the only way to see the area properly. It was such a good trip! We got to see fur seals, albatross and bottle nosed dolphins as well as some dramatic scenery.
After MIllford Sound we travelled back across to the East coast to Dunedin, which is where I am now, although we leave tomorrow morning. They have what is supposed to be New Zealand's most photographed building (in the picture). It's a train station but really nice and very fancy. They also have a Cadbury World here, although I haven't visited that. As well as wandering around looking at the sights we've also attempted a couple of nights out, but because the students are on holiday at the moment nowhere is really open so we failed the first night and the second I went home early to bed! We've also watched Toy Story 3 in 3D (not very New Zealand I know but we wanted to see it in 3D!) and today we visited a Yellow eyed penguin colony. The penguins were brilliant! They're really rare but the site we visited is privately owned by people who have dedicated it to their conservation and so are trying to make it as suitable for them as possible. In addition to that they've built lots of tunnels and hides in the area so you can view the penguins up close without disturbing them. We were very lucky today as we got to see 11 different penguins (usually people see 3 to 10) and a pair had chosen to nest that night in a spot only cm from one of the hides so we got to see them from really close. They're such funny creatures, especially when they waddle and jump to get around. There were more fur seals at the site too, just lazing about on the rocks.
Anyway, tomorrow we move on up the close, possibly past a site where you can maybe see Blue Penguins, if you're lucky, but we're not sure if we'll be there at the right time of day to do that. They're also very rare and very small so even if we are I don't know if we'll spot one. I hope so!
