Sua s'dei from Cambodia!! Have spent so long trying to get this internet to upload offexploring that i don't have that long to actually write the blog, as i need to be ready for dinner in about 40 mins.
Am currently at the beach which is amazing, especially compared to all the cities etc that we've been staying at thus far in the trip. Today we went snorkelling, which was really just an excuse to spend the day jumping into and out of the sea while eating BBQed barracuda (surprisingly tasty) and getting tremendously burnt (including for some reason my kneecaps, but no other part of my legs). The beaches where we are staying are very crowded, with an army of children constantly harassing you to buy things from them. So it was nice to get away to one of the more secluded islands today, and it was stunning scenery, it looked exactly like the posters that you can buy from Ikea etc with cute fishing boats, islands and blue skies. Yesterday we also went to a club on the beach that literally gave us all the free drinks we could handle!!
Before this we visited the temples of Angkor up in the North and Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. The temples were stunning, and I had really been looking forward to seeing them and they didn't disappoint. They're all about a thousand years old and all the carvings etc on them are so intricate and fine that pictures taken from far away can't quite capture it!! Our time in Pnhom Penh was mainly centred around learning about the Killing Fields and Pol Pot's regime which was terribly sad, we went to a prison-turned-museum where they have mug shots of all the people who were imprisoned there (who all inevitably went on to be killed), children and babies too. We also went to actually see the Killing Fields which were literally fields pockmarked with grave upon grave upon grave, all of which would have contained about 400 bodies.
Have been spending a lot of time actually physically travelling, mainly by bus. And most of our days seem to be centred largely around eating as we generally only get breakfast from the hotel. We have been trying to eat from the local markets etc and one night in Phnom Penh we went and ate at a Cambodian family's house (all 16 of us!), which was really good!! The food here doesn't seem to be as spicy as in Sri Lanka and Thailand which is a nice break. Vietnam is next on the itinerary though and i have no idea what they eat!! Hopefully not anything gross because I seem to feel duty bound to try anything odd on the menu (hence my recent meals including barracuda and tarantula-spiced-rice-wine)
Anyways i need to go have dinner xxxxxxxx
