This is "Te Reinga", the leaping off place of spirits. The tree sticking out from the far point (right side) marks the spot where the spirits of Maori dead leap into the sea on their journey to the underworld (actually equivalent to heaven). 'Reinga' means 'leaping'. You believe this? At most Maori funerals even today the body is addressed and instructed to "Go to 'Te Reinga'!" As such this point is possibly the most sacred place in the Maori world. Cheers, Jeff
