Karen's Travels
Hello everyone
This will probably be my last entry for a while so Jane and I have just tried (unsuccessfully) to download our photographs. Technology always lets us down, so sorry about that!
Had an unusual meal last night, called Chinese 'hotpot'. Went to a very hot, steamy back-street restaurant mostly inhabited by locals and were taken to the top floor and seated at tables which have big holes in the middle. Into those are placed a huge wok filled with liquid - mild on one side and spicy on the other. You then go to another room, collect a basket and fill it with various vegetables on sticks - broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms etc. and take them back to your table. You place them in the liquid to cook and then dip them in your small dish of sesame oil and garlic - and eat it! Also had lamb and beef on skewers and washed it down with a large bottle of Chinese beer (I don't generally drink beer but Chinese variety is light and refreshing). Took some good photos, especially of the men who can certainly put away a fair amount of food! It was a different experience, but I prefer to more civilised Chinese meal, which I think we have tonight before boarding our train for Langshuo (think that's the spelling). Into remote territory now so we went shopping for food stores today - the only Chinese breakfast that will be availabe is rice, noodles etc. which I don't think I can face first thing in the morning! May have to make do with biscuits instead. Also bought some dried fruit (mango) from local market today. Have also been souvenir shopping in Culture Street - got some authentic gifts for people. Left three of my tops in the last hotel. Luckily, Ailsa made a phone call and a colleague of hers was able to locate them and they will be brought on to me at some point by him. Also lost my spare camera battery and first memory card but, fortunately, the picture have been downloaded onto CD. I'm told I'm a real traveller now, as travellers always lose something! Will be visiting Tibetan monks/monasteries which I'm looking forward to. Not so much looking forward to a full day of cycling - those of you who know my 'expertise' with a bicycle will understand why! Well, that's about it. Need to get back to the hotel for dinner. Keep those messages coming until I can write some more. Still looking forward to coming home and seeing you all! Lots of love.
