Karen's Travels
Please ignore photos! Hello again! Had a great night's sleep in our comfortable Vegas hotel last night and feel human again. Went down to the 2nd floor for breakfast at a buffet place and paid $10 for a croissant and a cup of tea! (5 pounds). Then realised it was a set price and went back for cornflakes, bagel, fruit and more tea! Have been on the bus all day again today. Travelling on the Greyhound buses is an experience in itself. On the way to Vegas we travelled with three convicts who had just been released from jail. They had their cardboard boxes on their laps with their belongings and were planning how quickly they could get drunk to celebrate their release! Two black women got on the bus and fell into conversation with the ex-cons. It soom emerged that the younger black woman had also done time (drugs related crime) and she was loudly talking about her arrest at gunpoint! Today, I sat next to a lady who talked to herself all through the journey and let out intermittent bursts of laughter for no apparent reason. Americans lack our characteristic reserve and talk loudly - and to anyone - on buses! It was quite an entertaining ride today! Am staying at a lovely hostel here in Flagstaff. It feels so homely and friendly. We've had dinner and tomorrow at 9am we leave for an organised trip to the Grand Canyon, not returning until 7pm. So it will be a long, very hot day but I'm really looking forward to it and hope to take some great photos. By the way, I did get lost last night and it took me ages to locate the right elevators (slipping into American terminology, you notice!) to take me to the part of the building I needed! There are literally thousands of rooms in the hotel. All the hotels in Vegas have a theme - ours, obviously, based on circuses. The Sahara, I believe, has a desert theme and there are many others. Went for a quick walk along the strip this morning but the heat drove me back into the hotel pretty quickly! I would like to see a big evening show when we go back, but the tickets are quite expensive. Will probably settle for watching rich people gambling away their money instead! Looking forward to flying to Miami on Saturday for some more sun and surf! The desert is just too hot for me. Think that's about it for now, although I always remember something I want to tell you after I log off! Really looking forward to coming home now - only two weeks! Love to all. PS Did I tell you about the waterfall I climbed in Yosemite? Well, not literally but it was one of my major achievements this holiday and one of the highlights. Amazing views and I asked a complete stranger to take a photo of me near the top - just to prove I really did it. I hope you are all prepared to be totally bored with hundreds of photos when I get home. Bye!
