My Travels Around Australia

The Ettamogah Pub, Nr Albury
As most Australiana material revolved around pubs and drinking, Ken started incorporating the pub setting into his drawings. As a boy, Ken would cycle around a water hole called Ettamogah, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of good drink’. This struck Ken as an ideal name for a pub and hence the infamous Ettamogah cartoons were born. From the early 1950’s through to the late 1990’s, what is possibly the longest running cartoon in Australia has embodied the humour and current events of the day, in a typically Australian fashion. For millions of Australians spanning several generations, a week without a chuckle over the goings on of the Ettamogah Mob would be unthinkable.
