Happiness Is The Road
We had a lovely peaceful night with the only sound being the ocean. The weather was much better today. The cloud had lifted and we could see blue sky. After brekky we went for another walk along the beach. It's a very beautiful beach but it wasn't as brooding today in the bright warm sunlight. After this we left the camp site and drove the short distance down the coast to the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. We followed the trail through tropical vegetation to the coast and saw these beautiful horizontal sheets of limestone and mudstone that had been chiselled by the rain and the sea into curious stacks, ridges and chasms. They did indeed look a bit like stacked pancakes and were a very interesting sight. We watched the sea blasting into a huge surge pool and we also saw the big blowhole but unfortunately it wasn't blowing today. The swell in the sea just wasn't big enough. We saw a photo later in the gift shop of the blow hole erupting like a geyser and that was fine for us. We have after all already seen loads of very impressive blow holes blowing in Australia. The lady in the gift shop was as miserable as they come. When we made our purchase she looked at us like we were ***** she'd trodden on. We felt like she couldn't be ***** and that serving us was definitely too much trouble. It seems to us that she isn't very well suited to a people facing role in the tourist industry. It's unfortunate that people like her take the shine off New Zealand. In places this is a very stunning country scenery wise but the experience is tainted by people like her and the mad drivers of course. From the pancakes we continued along the twisting coastal road, with the usual aggression tailgating us, to Greymouth where we did some food shopping. From here we drove further along the coast to Hokitika where we found a camp site for the night. We got a nice spot on the end and chilled out for the rest of the day.
