Happiness Is The Road
After one of our usual leisurely breakfasts we hit the road. We didn't leave the camp site until gone eleven. The National Park camp sites are usually a lot more relaxed about check out times. We decided to go in the direction of Jervis Bay and stay on a camp ground at the Booderee National Park. It had a good write up in Lonely Planet and there were supposed to be some lovely white sandy beaches there. It wasn't easy to find Booderee as it wasn't that clear on the map exactly where it was, there were no clear sign posts and even Tom Tom didn't have a clue how to get there! We ended up in a place called Huskisson and stopped here to have a late lunch and have a bit of an argument as to where the hell the place was. We were confused. Huskisson itself was a quite upmarket coastal town. Very pretentious and full of ladies lunching. We went back the way we had come and went a different way at a roundabout. The roundabout had no sign for Booderee but shortly after turning onto this road we saw a sign for it. This National Park had really been put in a cryptic place! We got to the National Park at five to four and came to a pay booth for park fees. I asked about camping and the guy there told me to go and pay at the visitor centre next door. He said I might just be in time as they close at 4. I ran up to the visitor centre and got there just in the nick of time. The lady at the desk was a bit frosty but she allocated us a camp site and said that we could pay on our way out tomorrow. I thought it a very stupid that you couldn't just rock up and camp after 4. It seems a bit early to close a camp reception. Any how never mind we had made it even if it had been by a cats whisker. We then drove down to the Green Patch Campground another five kilometres away and found our spot. It was a nice camp area set amongst trees and fairly close to the beach. We had a walk to the beach later on and it was beautiful, all white sand, as promised. We had tea late and made chicken and avocado toasties in the camper by torch light! It goes dark here now soon after seven and our big lights aren't very effective especially on an unpowered site such as this.
