As we waited for our luggage to come round the carousel at Cairns airport we met two others from our flight that were heading to Nomads too. We all headed off to the hostel together and then on into Cairns.
As we walked towards the coast we came across the man made lagoon and esplanade. Its a great outdoor space, with a man made beach to relax on, water jets, swimming lagoon, cooking stations and wide grassy areas. This more than compensates for Cairns lack of real sand and abundance of mud!
We meandered along the esplanade and came to the harbour area with yachts moored and beautiful views. We decided this would be a great spot to eat lunch. After lunch we came across an ice cream shop selling all sorts of different italain gelato flavours! The shop allowed you to sample all the different flavours before purchasing and we were in great luck as the boy behind the counter was new and the samples he gave us were very generous. My favourite flavours were turkish delight, apple and red bull. We sat in the sunshine trying to eat our ice cream before it melted then headed into Cairns to plan some of our Australia activities and return to the hostel.
On the evening we had a free welcome drink and talk down in the bar. We met a great bunch of people who we then spent the rest of the night with, participating in a quiz (which we didn't place last in!) and playing pool and table tennis. The company was so relaxed and like minded that none of us even had another drink after our free drink, just enjoying each others company.
Unfortunatley we had to leave this group of people as the next morning we were in a taxi at 6.30am to catch a bus to Cooktown.
