Hi ho from Switzerland !!!
I'm sorry I didn't blog yesterday. It didn't seem important at all. Switzerland is so damn beautiful that no words can do its beauty any justice. I don't think I'll like any other place else as much as I do Switzerland and I've half the mind to quit the trip and just stay here till I expire. I don't know how Topdeck does this y'know ? Like each place we go to just keeps getting better.
Sigh.
Anyway, we are in the village of Lauterbrunnen right now which is located at the foot of Jungfrau Mountain. Accommodation is a cosy little cabin on camp grounds but I love it. We have on-site Topdeck chefs cooking for us and it's the best meals I've had so far. There's a bar within the camp grounds (just 5 metres away from our cabin) that has a tiny little creek outside of it that's used to chill drinks from the bar. Cool factor: 11/10.
People are very friendly - they smiled at us even though a group of us accidentally trespassed on their grounds into their gardens and did some jumping shots. You know how those pictures needs a lot of retakes and coordination ? By the time we left, their poor grass were trampled flat. They smiled and waved anyway. Aww.
Everything here makes me happy. Lots of mountains and grass and greenery and waterfalls and creeks and cows. I wished Twi (my dog) was here. He would have liked running wild through the fields of green. I miss him so much :(
Okay back to happier things.
While we were on our way in to Switzerland yesterday, Scott talked quite a bit about this country. They are famous of their policy of neutrality and thus have a lot of ways to keep the peace.
Fun fact #1: Every Swiss home keeps a gun.
Fun fact #2: The tunnels in Switzerland are rigged and built curved. In the case of an attack, missiles that have been launched to go through the tunnels will not be able to 'exit' the tunnel as it's not a straight path. Along with that, should the enemies enter through those tunnels rigged with dynamites and such, they will be blown up.
Brillant I say.
Anyway, Scott also told us that we have the option of riding up to the top of the Jungfrau Mountain which is also known as 'The Roof of Europe' 'cause it's the highest point at >12000ft high. Tickets were at CHF 157 per person which converts to about slightly over SGD$200 and we were seriously considering it when *drumroll* we were informed that STA Travel Singapore has paid for our tickets already. Awwsh ! They certainly were generous.
So we rode the historic Jungfraubahn railway up to the highest station today to visit the top of the snow-capped mountain. It took about 2 hours and I got more and more excited when I could see mist and clouds. Temperature was at minus 4 degrees celsius and despite having 3 layers on, I still almost froze. Such a sight though. Powdery white snow everywhere as far as you could see ... *sighs in happiness* I almost couldn't stop grinning.
We then visited the Ice Palace where there were detailed ice sculptures of animals. Vey cold, very cool. When we came out, I wanted to head back up outside to the cold winds and white snow but I started near-hyperventilating because the change in air pressure finally got to me. Such a loser right, I know. I'd walk a few steps and then stop because my heart was beating so fast that I was afraid it would jump out of my mouth. Thought of buying a tank of oxygen at CHF 15 but we decided to save the money and take things slow instead. Rested at a little cafe before taking a slow walk back down down to the station ...
:( I'm still beating myself up over it. Such a pity !!! :(
Oh well. I'll be back someday.
Okay I think this is too long an entry. I'm going to go for dinner (and drown in sadness thereafter at my inability to stay at >12000ft above ground for more than 2 hours) now anyway. Can't wait for piping hot food. Hope you guys back in Singapore are well and having fun ! xx
