After an 8 hour bus ride from Vilnius I arrived today in Warsaw at 5am. Luckily but unluckily depending how you look at it - I had trouble finding metro station - Warsaw has a mass network of trains. Anyway I arrived to my Couchsurfing hosts place at 6:30am a more decent hour to be disturbing their sleep!
So I am staying with 3 wonderful girls all students- Adele, Zuzana and Irena. Adele had to go to school so I caught up on some sleep.
In the afternoon we caught the metro into the city and checked out Warsaws old city. The city is truly beautiful - something I was not expecting at all (many people give Warsaw a bad rap saying its a modern city no history to see). I found the whole style of the architecture and buildings quiet unique from Stallions gift the Cultural Palace to the old Castle walls.
I had a really good time just hanging out with Adele and Zuzana both of them loads of fun. We were doing handstands and cartwheels at the lookout causing a bit of a scene unknown to locals.
Adele and I decided to make some typical Polish cuisine: a sour cabbage, carrot, onion and Polish sausage stir fry. Adele had never made before either so we just made it up as we went and wow turned out great! We were going to Adele's friends house later where a group of her friends were and would be celebrating St Andrews Night. We started on the wine early and Irena came home from work and joined us. By the time we were ready to leave we had drunk two bottles so we had to go get another.
We caught the Metro once again to Adele's friends house and the party began. Lots of great food, vodka, wine, pagan rituals the whole works oh and 4 more gorgeous girls to hang out with. I once again have to pinch myself - "yes, yes this is really happening" and god I love my life. Polish people from what I can gather on my very short visit are incredibly kind and very friendly and open to outsiders. By 1pm everyone decided to head out luckily Adele was ready to go home as was I but it had been an awesome introduction to Warsaw and Polish culture.
Saturday I had a big sleep in and after drinking 3 bottles of red I was feeling a little worse for where. I also wrecked myself doing cartwheels yesterday so I have a few aches and pains from that too. Adele made an amazing crab and noodle salad for breakfast.
I went into the city and to the old covered market. It has become one of my favorite things to do now but the market was much the same as the others I had visited in the other Baltic countries just a little more expensive. I walked around the city for a few hours before heading back to Adele's and getting ready for my 12 hour overnight bus to the Czech Republic and Prague.
Adele walked me to the bus station so we said our goodbyes and who knows I might even come back to Warsaw in a few days time. The bus is pretty comfortable and not full so can't complain - just hope I can get some sleep.
