Hi all,
Koh Phagnan - The story so far.....
So after checking into to Coco Huts I decided to go for a wander around Had Rin, this is the busiest part of Koh Phagnan. There is a main street that has all the usual bars, restaurants, tourist agencies and clothes stalls. There are some smaller streets that go off the main one too ehich have more of the same crammed in. Down in the beach, Sunrise beach that is, there are hotels, and bars. It is very busy down there and is where the full moon party is held. The beach I am staying on is the Sunset beach which is only a 5 minute walk away but it means I get to sleep at night cos on Sunrise beach they party all night. I must be getting old cos I don't join them and instead watch the free films shown in the bars and restaurants on the main street.
I have had quite a relaxing time this week, I have been going for a swim in the pool in the morning and then sunbathing most of the day, resting ready for Thai boxing class at 4pm. I have been to the beginners class so far as it is alot different to Body Combat at the gym and you get to spar and use the pads as opposed to shadow boxing in the mirror. It's really good and hard work, especially in this heat. I think I lost a stone in a hour it was that hot! They have told me I should come the the intermediate/advanced class next time as I have now got the hang of it. Oh yeah - 2 hours of sweating, maybe not. But then again it's not like I'm run off my feet so maybe I will go - all kitted out in the shorts and the hand straps! Watch this space......
After one of the Thai boxing lessons, I decided to go out with a group of girls who had also taken the class, one of whom I accidently kicked instead of the pad! She saw the funny side and I decided they would be good drinking buddies. So off we went round all this little bars that oyu wouldn't even notice where there. So small that they didn't have toilets and so off to the nearest bush! Then again they were cleaner than some of the toilets/holes in the floor I have visited since being here!
Was a really good night out but probably a mistake to drink so much the night before my Thai cooking course! I set off up the huge hill that I have to climb everyday (no need for step classes I'll tel ya) still a bit drunk to find the restaurant. I got there and was handed a rather fetching pinny to wear and then ushered into the kitchen. 'Mind the dog' said Kate (one of the girls on the course). Dog? Yep there he was all scruffy and smelly and fast asleep right next to the food prep area! You have to just go with it though, that and all the flies that were buzzing around the raw meat! Oh well if it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger!
We made four courses, spring rolls, thai green curry, prawn pad thai (stir fry) and Chicken and Cashew nuts. After we had made a couple of spring rolls we took a break from the boiling hot kitchen (great with a hangover) and ate them at a specially laden table. It was then that it dawned on us that wew were expected to eat all four courses - well who else was going to eat it? Ok, can I have a doggy bag please? I did try each one though after cooking them and they were all really nice, the curry being my favourite. So, now armed with a recipe book and the knowledge that I definatley cook better drunk I will be holding a Thai dinner party when I get home!
The waether has been really nice and the tan is coming along now, every now and then oyu get a bit of rain but it's very refreshing. Tomorrow is the full moon party and I am going with Kate and Sarah who I met on the cooking course. Both are northeners - one from Manchester and one from Liverpool so should be great. It was funny today as I decided to go shopping for something to wear to the party and so it seemed had everyone on Koh Phagnan! No matter where you are in the world girls you still have that age old problem of 'what do I wear'! Now it is so close tot he party the town is packed, hundreds of poeple have been arriving everyday. It was like a Saturday at the Trafford Centre, everyone frantically trying to find something to wear for Saturday night. I found a lovely top/dress that you just throw over your bikini, but then in the next shop I saw an even nicer top. At " quid each I decided to but both - well it's nice to have options, and they will get their use over the next 6 months!
Well better go - outfits to perfect and nails to paint, but at 3 quid a go I could just have a manicure at the local salon!
I'll let you know how the party goes once I've recovered.....
Lots of love Julie
