Joy Down Under
Week 1- Cairns, Australia
Australia is all what I imagined it would be. Even though it is hot and humid like Florida, the weather is perfect enough all day around. I have met some really cool people. It's really funny that I am the only black person in the program to come to Newcastle. It's really hard however, hanging with my newly found friends, because they would like to just drink. It is on everyone's schedule to find the nicest bar in town. I have one friend here from school and he and I instantly bonded because of same backgrounds. It is hard trying to be a somewhat "Christian" because everything around me tells me to follow everyone else. It seems to be that I am one of two (including my friend Robin) of all the people here. The legal drinking age here is 18, which made the participants really happy. I am trying to decide if it is even worth it to spend my money of alcohol, and since I don't' have much of it, I decide not to. So, I find myself doing other things like eating lots of ice cream. Do you know that there's Baskin Robbins? That was the most exciting news I heard, so I spend my time and few dollars hopping around trying different ice creams, which is heavenly. The worst part is, walking around town sometime last night, I had my wallet stolen. It was really sad, and it was hard to tell who or how since there were hundreds of people on the streets last night. So, it's a real big bummer. I had about $40 in cash. I have to figure out how to get more money, because I have to pay for my own dinner today. However, I praise God that they did not take my digital camera. It's strange to think that I have been to all these third world countries like Mexico, Tanzania, and Bolivia, and never had a problem with it, but here it is a different story. I now know to keep a good watch on everything, and I am not going to wear a back pack, so I can keep a watch on my possessions. Still keep me in prayer and write me lots of messages. I leave Cairns in a couple of days to start orientation at my university, and I am so excited for it. We will be able to go on a dolphin watch cruise and eat a "smorgasbord" of food, which is my new favorite phrase. So, we will see what goes on in the next couple weeks.
