Jono's Travels
Today we celebrate Tall Ryan's birthday along with investigating Vienna. A semi late start to the day getting up at 8am and headed off at 9am to town on the bus, we got dropped off and the Fantastic 5 (Tall Ryan, Meg, Damien, Lieu and myself) headed into the old town and made our way to a famous cafe called Central Cafe where Freud, Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, and Trotsky were all patrons of in their life. While we were there Meg broke out a gift she got for Tall Ryan, essentially a kind of baby powder, this should help him with the long walks we have been doing. We sung him happy birthday in the cafe as well. We then moved on from there to the Saint Stephens Cathedral where we took a look inside, only to find that there were a bunch of priests all being ordained, this meant we couldn't really go too far in, so instead we headed outside and headed to the back where we could climb one of the towers. It was 343 steps to the top, but it would surely give us a workout for the day. We made our way up small spiral staircase only to meet many people on their way down, this meant we had to take the inside of the steps to pass everyone which just made things even more tiring. We got to the top to find that we couldn't actually look around the outside of the tower, we had to look out the windows from the top room that we were in. While the views were quiet nice, we couldn't take it the full view due to the obvious walls and ceiling of the room we were in. Down the stairs and then we continued on down one of the streets toward a building I had seen earlier, turns out it was the town hall and it was closed off due to parades happening today. So instead we headed to a market to find something to eat, eventually finding a kebab to eat. My goodness it tasted so good, I would have easily eaten another one, but didn't want to risk overeating too much. We continued to look around the markets, heading all the way to the far end to find people selling second hand stuff. I actually enjoyed this part more as it wasn't the same old stuff that every other market seemed to have, each stall here was different. While I didn't buy anything, it was still nice to look around. We headed back to the meeting point that we were to meet up with Sabrina. Upon arriving we still had about 45 minutes before she was due to arrive so we just sat around in the park. There was a Jesus Parade happening while we were there, so I headed down to see what it was like, it was huge, I've never seen so many people gathered to do a parade for Jesus in this magnitude. I then realised that it was on the street that we had driven down to get there in the morning. just in case it wasn't going to be open I called Sabrina from the parade to let her know the road was closed. It turned out to be clear by the time Sabrina and Ronnie turned up, but better they be prepared. Off to the the Schnapps Museum where we learnt a bit about the place and then sampled a few of the Snapps and then those that wanted to could buy some. I decided that I already had enough in my Duty Free so wouldn't be able to bring any back with me anyway. We then headed back into town to get dropped off or to continue back to the hotel. Most of us that got dropped into town were going to go a Classical music event at a hall, the rest could do their own thing. Some of us headed to a man made beach in the city which had a few bars in it. We ordered a drink which came out in a really large glass, I'm not complaining as I polished it off rather quickly, I think they must make drinks in Europe pretty weak. After our drink we headed off to a nearby restaurant to have dinner, only to run into another parade... The Gay Parade. They all seemed to be having fun and had some good music. There were also some people rather emotional about it and hugging each other while crying, I guess this helps some people have an outlet that they haven't felt they have had before. We continued on and had dinner before making our way to the concert where we were entertained by classical music of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Strauss as well as being entertained by some singing and dancing while some of the music was played. I enjoyed the concert and recognised some of the music, also the champagne at intermission certainly made it more enjoyable for everyone. The musicians performed a couple of encores as well. After the concert we headed back to the hotel where I headed off to bed.
