We arrived into Shanghai after what seemed like an eternity on a train! 26 hours to be precise! If you know me well, which most of you will, I have a trouble keeping still! However little sleep from the night before had done me proud and I managed to sleep most of the way! Result!
Anyway we arrived in at about 11 in the morning and got a taxi to our pre booked hostel called the Ming Town place. It was situated in a small alley way that from the outside did not look tempting at all. Charles and I exchanged looks when we saw it initially as if to say, 'thats what you get for 3 pound a night'. Upon further inspection the hostel was probably one of the nicest we had stayed in with a large courtyard, tv room and lots of mini koy (exscuse the spelling) fish ponds dotted around the place.
We settled in and then went off to explore. We had 2 items on the agenda, One was a couple of beers and the other was some culture. We thought we better get the culture out of the way first so that we felt we deserved some beer so we headed for the Shanghai Museum. It was fairly interesting with some coins that dated back to the early part of the millenium! They were the size of small knives! I wouldn't want to be carrying those around with me!
A little trick we had learnt in China was that not many people could understand what we were saying or what words said when we wrote them down! We had managed to get into major sight seeing places by showing our Driving license and claiming that it was our student card! All for the sake of a couple of pounds, but hey we are traveling. Like I have always been told, look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves. But apparently they speak really good english at the museum and pretty much laughed in Ians face when he showed his driving license to be told that it was not a student card. He then offered them his spurs membership card and then as a last resort his blockbuster card. We had to pay the full amount
Anyway we headed out for a couple of beers that we met in the hostel who were playing cards with us! Gareth (the Ginger Prince) and Luke (head on his side.....long story). It was a quality night which involved ending up in quite a bizarre club with all of the English lads dancing up on the stage with all of the chinese copying! Brits Abroad....we lav it! Hahaha
Next day we headed off to the Bund, which is the river which runs through Shanghai. It was quite tatty with lots of beggers and people trying to sell fake rolexs. It wasn't the best start to the day! We had a couple of hours to spare so we headed off to the Golf Club, basically a driving range and hit some balls!
Next we went to the top of the Hyatt Building which is currently the 4 largest building in the world. The view from the top was absolutely amazing. The whole building seemed to rock! We headed down and then went to the station to buy our next train ticket, another mass journey that would see us stranded on the train for a further 24 hours to Guillin.
Next day we chilled out and went to a market where we bought some dvd's which i have tested and don't appear to work! Oh well. Thanks for nothing! They were only 30p each so it hasn't broken the bank! Off to Guilin next! The hick town of China
