SUNDAY 6th July. After an eight hour drive to Perth yesterday, we laboured through an eleven hour flight beginning at the crack of dawn today. One word bum numbing even though that's two. There were lots of great movies on the Emirates plane to watch, we caught up with the likes of Philomena, loved, Gravity was rubbish, Hotel Budapest was fabulous, Captain Phillips was rivoting and the Book Thief brought tears. Landed in Dubai after crossing desert plains, the humidity struck us immediately. The atmosphere was clouded with dust and smog, something we didn't expect. The buildings were immense, just as expected. Our apartment was nicely air conned and became our immediate respite for the hot afternoon waiting for the temp to cool before we headed out to explore the marina and local market and shops. All the cafés were closed until sunset due to Ramadan, so we cooked up dinner for ourselves back at the apartment, Neil's famous Cajun chicken.
Caught the metro train to see the sights and sounds of the city. The system was clean and efficient and we were able to hop on and off all day. We managed three malls of epic proportion and size, what you couldn't buy there wouldn't be worth having. One of the malls had a ski slope and the other an ice rink, in that heat it's amazing and very ridiculous. A very excessive place I would have to say. One cannot even drink water in public without raising the attention of security guards and risking a fine.
We walked the "walk" in front of Jamiera Beach and had a swim in the very warm waters of the Gulf a toasty 28 degrees. Refreshing NOT.
