So since my my last entry I have been to and left Holland. Call me old fashioned but I like to call it Holland. We left the beautiful Rhine Valley and all her grapes for windmills and clogs. When we crossed the border into Holland I instantly fell in love with it!! Why?? The beautiful lush green paddocks, dairy cows everywhere and of course horses, namely show jumpers. I was home - or in heaven I couldn't choose. As weird as it sounds I felt an instant connection with this place, almost overwhelming, I'm tearing up just writing about it. I find it a real surreal feeling that both my Mum and Dad set foot in this part of the world 60 odd years ago. It made me so proud to know that this is where my heritage lies, in the countryside of Holland. I know people immediately think of drugs and prostitution when Amsterdam is mentioned but I really feel if you come to this country you have to avoid being distracted by that and take in it's true beauty, which lies with the windmills and the countryside. It is truly amazing and I know for a fact that a lot of people fail to embrace it.
We first went to Edam where we met Jasper who took us for a bike ride t check out some dykes. We also saw the highest point in Edam which is not very high at all! No wonder this little place floods so much. The houses were very pretty sitting beside the water with massive gardens - Much like Mums. On the eay back i noticed all the willow trees beside the canals - just like home but rather a creek then a canal! We got back to the bus before the rain set in and it was off to a cheese and clog making factory. If any of you are on Facebook you'll see me planking a giant clog here. here we saw how clogs are made and were talked through the cheese making process. The cheese factory smelt like Dads vats back home in the cow shed, yet another reminder of home. The clogs were impressive and had my size but I did not purchase them as they would be too much trouble to bring home. I loved this part of our trip, when the guy was making the clogs I was reminded of the clogs mum has back home from when she was a little girl.
