Hello all, and due to popular demand another update from Iran...
From Kerman i visited Bam, for the day. 4 years ago Bam castle, or Arg-E-Bam was one of the best sites in Iran. Then a richter 6.4 earthquake hit the town. As you can see, the mud brick construction did not cope too well. Neither did most of the houses within the town.
Unfortunately not much has changed in these 4 years. The rebuilding process seems to be very slow and Bam is a shanty town now where most residents are living in shipping containers!
The people down here were not as friendly as in the rest of Iran. In fact, i had a small fight in a bus with an older man who took exception to the seat i was in and tried to throw me off the bus. That was my signal to leave the south east and since then i have been back in Yazd, the stronghold of Zoroastrians in Iran.
I visited the towers of silence yesterday, Where according to Zoroastrian belieft, dead bodies are left to be eaten by vultures so their blood does not stain the earth. The bones were then dissolved in acid. An eerie place.
Yesterday was also the holiday as it was the celebration of the birth of mohammeds daughter. a big carnival and procesion happened in the centre of town, with the slaughter of a bull, drumers, singers and mouners slapping themselves with chains! Check the photos!
Today, i have visited their eternal flame. Burning for around 700 years. But the belief system is quite interesting, as the world's first monotheistic religion.
Finally Turkmen visa approved today, so off to Tehran in a day to collect! Then Mashad in the north east and cross the border to Turkmenistan!
Khoda Hafez!
Good Bye!
